WORKSHOP. HOW TO MAKE QUALITY CASTINGS IN OUR ART MOLDS

Here you will find step-by-step casting process using Type A mold (Removable). Please also pay attention to differences in using Molds for Food and complex molds and read our recommendations for storage the molds.

Casting in Removable molds (Type A)

1. Get ready the molds, materials and tools.

2. Flip the mold and place it in a suitable container - at this picture, in a glass mug (at the left hand).

The casting material is in the measuring cup.

3. You can use a sheet of cardboard with a hole if the container is too large.

4. Let the casting material to be in a liquid state according to the manual and fill in the mold.

Attention: some casting materials are liquid at high temperatures. Do not allow your casting material to boil to avoid air bubbles.

The material should cure. Find the conditions in the manual.

In the meantime you can work with the next mold.

5. The casting is completely hard. Stretch the mold at the bottom of the casting carefully and cautiously.

Do not use any sharp tool.

6. You should stretch the mold in different directions.

7. Remove the mold from the casting, slowly and gently stretching and bending the mold.

8. Do not always pull in the same direction, do not make any sudden movements.

9.

10. As a result, the mold can be turned inside out.

11.

12. Be especially careful removing the mold from subtle elements of the casting.

13. If the casting material includes abrasive, hard or sharp inclusions (for example, you can include crystals of salt, coffee beans, dried grass, flower petals, etc. in the soap) be careful to avoid damaging the mold by these inclusions.

14. The mold is completely removed. Return the mold to its original state.

15. The mold is ready to be reused.

Finalizing the casting

16. You can cut a surplus material.

17. Snippets can be re-casted if the material allows.

How To: Molds for food (Tips)

You must comply with hygiene rules during the casting process.

Some of food casting products and ingredients (eg, chocolate), have low fluidity in the heated state. You have to pre-heat the mold and the material first to ensure good quality of small details of the casting. At the same time, you should avoid overheating the material and inner air bubbles.

You will have good quality chocolate figurines in every food mold following these tips.

Please note that the weight of the chocolate casting may be 10 percent higher than indicated in the mold description.

Choose a mold complexity based on the casting material features. Using materials with low strength in the hard state (eg, jelly) you will have quality castings with molds of relatively simple form without long narrow cavities. It is possible to make fairly complex chocolate castings. In any case, we recommend to start with simple molds. If you have difficulty in choosing please do not hesitate to contact us to get our help and advise.

How To: Complex molds and Materials with low fluidity (Tips)

Molds with increased complexity are marked with the pictogram in the Catalogue.

If the mold has a complex inner structure and the casting material has a low fluidity and a short hardening time, the casting may not be completely filled with the material and some cavity shapes may be empty. Simply rotate and jiggle the mold to avoid the problem. You can gently anoint all long narrow cavities inside with the material using a soft brush and than fill in the form in the usual manner.

We recommend to start with simple molds without long narrow cavities and narrow isthmus between the elements.

How to increase the mold life expectancy

The molds in the Catalogue can be repeatedly used and have a high survivability. To extend the life of the mold:

  • Avoid contact with sharp objects, alcohol solutions, solvents and other aggressive substances. The mold may be washed with warm soapy water.
  • If you made a large batch of castings using the same mold, give the mold a rest.
  • Be particularly careful when freezing and heating of the mold: the mold strength and elasticity may differ from the usual.
  • Bring the mold to its original state if it was turned inside out. Avoid crumpling during storage.
  • The mold should be stored at room temperature. Do not store the mold at low temperature, keep out of direct sunlight.

We wish you success, joy and luck in your creativity!
